Calm as a Cucumber: How Jesus Handled His Busy Days

Writer: Kacie Starr LongKacie Starr Long

Ever feel like your hair is on fire?
Ever feel like your hair is on fire?

Last year, there were days when it felt like my hair was on fire.

I was busy running around my business, Sew Hope—helping customers, teaching sewing classes, tackling the never-ending back-office needs, tending to volunteers and staff, all while trying to be a good wife to my husband, Alfred, exercise regularly, and drink enough water so I didn’t shrivel up like a raisin.

By the end of the year, I was overwhelmed, burned out, and beyond grateful for the extended holiday break.

Maybe you understand what it’s like to feel like your hair (or pants) are on fire.

Running around to make sure your kids are okay. Cooking dinner, cleaning the home, while also working on your personal dreams and aspirations. Trying to exercise regularly, listen to podcasts, and stay on top of your family and friends' needs.

It can be overwhelming!

But then, I came across Matthew 9 and realized Jesus had quite a hair-raising day Himself—and yet, He stayed calm as a cucumber.

A Day in the Life of Jesus

In Matthew 9, we read that:

  • Jesus heals a paralyzed man, brought to Him by friends full of faith.

  • Right after that, He gets into it with religious teachers upset that He had the nerve to heal AND forgive the man.

  • Then, Jesus calls Matthew to be His disciple—cue the drama from people scandalized that a tax collector would be chosen.

  • Next, Jesus deals with folks throwing shade because His disciples don’t fast. Jesus, with patience, explains that fasting has its time and place.

  • Before He can take a breath, a leader begs Him to heal his daughter. On His way, a woman interrupts by touching the hem of His garment, and Jesus heals her first before continuing to raise the girl from the dead!

  • As if that weren’t enough, He then heals two blind men and casts out a demon.

Talk about a "hair on fire" kind of day!

Jesus..so patient and loving as He handles many issues in a day

Yet, Jesus never seems rushed, flustered, or frustrated. He stays focused on His purpose: healing the sick and setting captives free.

How Did Jesus Stay Calm?

Now, I know what you’re thinking: "That’s Jesus! I’m just trying to get through Tuesday without losing my mind."

But let’s remember that Jesus, though 100% God, was also 100% human.

He got tired. He got overwhelmed. And when He did, He stepped away to pray and replenish Himself.

I don’t believe God is asking us to run ourselves ragged. But He does want us to learn from Jesus' example—stay focused on our purpose and stay close to the Father.

We see over and over again that Jesus could handle His demanding days because He regularly withdrew to pray.

Too much multi-tasking can erode our peace.
Too much multi-tasking can erode our peace.

If I’m not careful, I’ll multitask myself into oblivion—teaching a sewing class, helping a customer, and running my embroidery machine, all with a smile on my face. But if I skip my God-time, I’ll crash and burn.

God doesn’t want us to burn out. Even in our busiest seasons, He wants us anchored in Him, nourished, and strengthened for the work He’s called us to do.

So friend, how are you managing your busy days? Are you running on fumes, or are you staying connected to God?

This week, I challenge you to set aside intentional time with God—whether it’s five minutes in the morning, a prayer walk, or worship time in your car. Let Him refuel you so that you’re operating from His strength, not your own.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for showing us through Jesus' life that we can handle our busy days when we stay close to You. Help me not to rush through life but to pause, pray, and be refueled by Your presence. Teach me to walk in my purpose without burnout. In Jesus' name, Amen.
